Wide Plank Flooring

Wide plank flooring is milled in board widths of 5 inches and greater. It is milled from lumber cut from the main trunk of a tree and contains more heartwood which can be produced into wider widths. Wider planks mean more heartwood which means greater density and durability. In contrast to strip flooring, the ordinary, mass produced flooring people are used to seeing, wide plank flooring promotes a feeling of openness, timelessness, and character. Average board lengths range from 2 to 10 feet. A truly superior and remarkable floor. At Character Hardwood Floors, we have the patience and the know-how, to take the necessary extra steps in jobsite preperation required for the success of a wide plank floor. Maximum width allowable over infloor heat - 5 inches (hickory and maple not applicable).

Traditional Strip Flooring

Traditional Strip Flooring is a type of wood flooring that is milled from lumber cut from smaller, less desirable parts of a tree, such as limbs and the upper portion of the trunk. Because this portion of a tree contains less heartwood (the durable core of the trunk), strip flooring is often cut into shorter lengths and narrower widths. It is milled into 1 1/2”, 2 1/4”, 3 1/4”, and 4“ board widths and comes in an average of 1 to 7 foot board lengths. It is then graded by its amount of defects allowable into select/clear grade, #1, #2, and #3.
